A 1,9-diazaphenalene derivative is represented by ＃＃STR00001＃＃ where R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3, Y.sup.1, and Y.sup.2 are as defined in the specification and claims. The 1,9-diazaphenalene derivative may emit fluorescence after being excited, and is thus suitable for use as a fluorescent material for an organic light emitting diode. A method for preparing the 1,9-diazaphenalene derivative is also disclosed.
